All Children are Intelligent.
Note I am not asking how intelligent is your child, I am asking how your child is intelligent. In 1983 Dr. Howard Gardner developed the theory of Multiple Intelligence which states that we all have 8 forms of intelligence and what some might call a talent or gift he believes to be an intelligent.
So how is your child intelligent?
I am offering you a brief overview of the eight multiple intelligences as defined by Dr. Gardner and activities to help you understand your child’s intelligence.
Everybody has 8 intelligences according to Dr. Howard Gardner. We are all very intelligent in different ways.
You are Smarter than you think.
Did you know intelligence can be developed? One time we thought that intelligence was stagnant, ‘that what you got was what you had forever’ we now know that intelligence can be developed and enhanced.
The Eight forms of Intelligence as defined by Howard Gardner:
Verbal/Linguistic: Children with high verbal/linguistic intelligence are great talkers, and good at story telling either verbally or in writing. They have a great ability to memorize words and dates.
Logical/Mathematical: Children with high logical/mathematical intelligence usually excel in their school math, chess, computer games and any logical and number related activities.
Interpersonal: Children high in the Interpersonal intelligence have a sensitivity to others feelings and moods, are extroverts and enjoy working in groups. These children tend to have a large group of friends.
Intrapersonal:Children high in this intelligence tend toenjoy working on their own. They are very inward in their thinking and may appear to be very quiet at times. They are comfortable with just a few close friends.
Visual/Spatial:Children high in Visual/Spatial intelligence are usually good at visualizing, can close their eyes and picture things. They are good with puzzles, building models, and have a good sense of direction.
Bodily/Kinesthetic: Children high in this intelligence are usually good at physical activities. They are interested in dancing, sports, acting and performing.
Musical:Children high in Musical intelligencehavean understanding and awareness of rhythm and pitch, are usually good singers and or excel in playing musical instruments.
Naturalist: Children high in Natural intelligence tend to enjoy all things associated with nature. They seem to have a feeling and understanding for animals and plants. They possess a great ability to categorize objects.
Activity One : Read each intelligence, think about your child, note the activities that your son or daughter are interested in, and now answer the question, how is your child intelligent? Which intelligences describe your child? List them.
Activity Two: have your son or daughter list what they love to do, what they enjoy doing. Now compare to the 8 intelligences. Note the intelligence(s) that relates to child’s list of activities. Compare to the list you created.
We all have the eight intelligence, we of course will be stronger in some than in others. We can use our strengths to develop the other intelligences.
